Karen spent the early years of her life growing up on a farm in Nebraska. The oldest of six children, she developed a strong sense of responsibility and a solid, Midwestern work ethic at an early age. Karen was the first in her family to attend college and traded small-town life for the big city when she moved to Chicago to attend law school.

A firm believer in "learning through doing," Karen has been actively involved in the technology community since her early days as a legal practitioner. Her involvements include serving a three-year term on the Board of Directors of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), the pre-eminent, 18,000+ member organization for health information technology professionals. She also served for a number of years on the Board of Directors of the Greater Chicago Chapter of HIMSS and was selected chapter member of the year in 1995. Karen has two young children who occupy much of her time outside the practice of law. She has a passion for foreign travel, and thus far has visited many major U.S. cities and 14 foreign countries (with plans for more foreign travel on the near-term horizon). Her children are following closely in her footsteps, as they already have well-used passports and their own frequent flyer numbers. In addition to travel, Karen enjoys outdoor activities, including biking, hiking, skiing and gardening, is an avid reader and a budding pianist, and lets loose her artistic talents on her scrapbooking projects.
